How do I Create a Canvas Shell Course

Body

Overview

A Canvas Shell course is a blank course space that instructors can use for various purposes, such as building course content before a term begins, experimenting with new teaching strategies, or collaborating with colleagues. Students should not be added to course shells due to FERPA issues. This article provides a step-by-step guide to creating a Canvas Shell course, ensuring that you correctly name the course, select the appropriate content license, and understand best practices for maintaining an organized learning environment. Following these steps will help you efficiently set up a course shell that meets your instructional needs.

Instructions

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. In the Global Navigation Menu, click the "Dashboard" button.
  3. In the Dashboard sidebar, click the "Start a New Course" button. You may need to scroll down to see this button.
  4. A pop-up window will appear in which you will need to input information about the name of the course and the content license.
    1. Add your "New Course" name.  You will not be able to change this name in the future, however, you can always reach out and ask eLearning Services to edit it for you.  When you are naming your course, please do not add a section number.  Section numbers are assigned to individual courses and they need to be unique in our Canvas account. When making a course, we suggest adding "Practice Course", "Sandbox Course", "Shell", or something else that identifies that it is not an actual live course.
    2. The second field that needs to be edited is the Content License.  It is defaulted to Private (Copyrighted), if you want to edit that, click the carrot drop down menu and pick the attribution that you want associated to that course.  We suggest keeping your course "Private, Copyrighted" unless you are developing OER content.
  5. To create the course, click the Create button. To cancel course creation, click the Cancel button.

You can now build in this course like a live course, or you can import from another course
