How Do I Import Content Into My Shell

Overview

Transferring course materials from one Canvas course to another can streamline course setup and save time for instructors. This guide walks faculty through the process of importing content, ensuring that assignments, quizzes, discussion posts, and modules transfer smoothly. Faculty can choose to copy an entire course or select specific content, and they have the option to adjust or remove due dates during the import. Following these steps will help maintain consistency across courses and simplify course management in Canvas.

Instructions

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. Go to the course you want to import into.
  3. In the Course Navigation, Click Settings.
  4. Click the Import Course Content link.
  5. In the Content Type drop-down menu, select the Copy a Canvas Course option.
  6. In the Search for a course box, type the name of the course you want to copy.
    1. Courses are ordered alphabetically by most recent term. You can also choose to include completed courses by selecting the Include completed courses checkbox, which is selected by default. To search for a course by name, enter the name or SIS ID in the Course name field. Click the name of the course when it appears.
  7. Now it is time to select what you want to copy over, all content or just specific content.
    1. To import all content from the course, select the All content radio button.
    2. If you want to select specific content, click the Select specific content radio button. Note: If you select the specific content option, you are required to select the content you want to import after you review the remaining page options. After you start importing the content, the import selection cannot be canceled.
  8. If the course you are copying from has dates assigned to assignments, quizzes, discussion posts, and/or modules, we suggest you remove the due dates. The reason we suggest this is due to a bug in the copying mechanism; removing those due dates will make it a smooth transition. To remove those due dates by completing the following two steps (if you do not have due dates, then you can skip this step):
    1. Check Adjust events and due dates.
    2. Click Remove Dates.
  9. Click the + Add to Import Queue button.
    1. The Content Imports section displays the status of your import. Running reports display a progress bar.  If you choose to select specific content in your course, the current job will show as Waiting for selection, which means you must select the content you want to import. The import may also display other status indicators as part of the import process.
  10. View the content from any completed imports by accessing any link in Course Navigation.
