How do I add and remove people to/from my manually created course?

Currently, Canvas does not allow faculty to add people to their live courses as schools have different ways to make sure that FERPA, Title IX, and Security issues are handled in a way that they need to proactively.  This protects students and faculty.  When an instructor creates a Shell/Sandbox Course (a manually created course) they do have permission to add another user as a "teacher."  This comes in handy if you want to give another instructor access to your course material (without students), create a Canvas Training course that you want to add other folks to, or a department creates a repository of information for their faculty. 

Here are the steps to add someone to your manually created course:

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. Click the "People" tab in the navigation bar.
  3. Click the "+ People" tab and a pop-up window will appear. 
  4. Canvas Automatically clicks "Email Address", you will need to click the "SIS ID" option as we now log into Canvas using our ctcLink Id number and not through email anymore. 
  5. Type in the ctcLink ID number of the individual or individuals that you want to add to this manually created course.
  6. Click the "Role" drop-down option and choose the one you want, usually instructor or student.  
  7. Click Next. 
    • If an individual that you added has worked or attended another school using ctcLink, another pop-up window will appear, asking you to verify which account you want to associate with the person you just added.  Please choose the one that is associated with Shoreline Community College.  If you pick one from another school, you will merge those accounts and the person you are adding will no longer be able to access Canvas at any institution. If you happened to do this, please reach out to eLearning and let them know to un-merge the individual's account. 
    • Once you pick the correct account, click "Next."
  8. Click "Add Users."

Here are the steps to remove someone from your manually created course:

  1. Log into Canvas.
  2. Click the "People" tab in the navigation bar.
  3. Find the person in the roster and click the "Ellipses" (⋮).
  4. A pop-up window will appear, click "remove from course".
  5. Another pop-up window will appear, click "ok".
