eLearning Peer Mentor Program

What is an eLearning Peer Mentor?

The eLearning Peer Mentor works with online students (mentees) in their first or second quarter at SCC. They support student success by cultivating a thoughtful relationship with their mentees and by actively listening to and engaging with them to help them build a sense of community at Shoreline. A Peer Mentor also serves as a knowledgeable guide who can connect new online students to the right people and resources on campus to help them succeed in the online learning environment.

The role of an eLearning Peer Mentor is to support student success by:

  • Cultivating a thoughtful relationship with mentees by actively listening to and engaging with them.
  • Being a knowledgeable guide for new students.
  • Being a thoughtful facilitator who provides access to people and resources on campus.
  • Helping facilitate a smooth transition into, acclimation to, and a sense of belonging at Shoreline.
  • Being a positive role model and advocate for mentees.

Benefits to YOU - the Mentee!

Peer mentorship has been shown to improve the following for the mentee:

  • Academic achievement
  • Self-efficacy
  • Social skills
  • Feeling of connection to school and peers
  • Likelihood of staying in school and graduating

Mentee Commitment

Mentees participating in the eLearning Peer Mentor Program are expected to:

  • Watch an informal training video and fill out a training verification form.
  • Complete an Agreement with your mentor during your first meeting.
  • Meet with your mentor at least once a week for roughly 30-60 min.
  • Arrange a meeting time with your mentor for each following week, and inform your mentor as soon as possible if you ever can’t attend.
  • Fill out a meeting log within one day of every meeting with your mentor.
  • Contact the Program Director if issues with mentoring arise, including wanting to discontinue your mentoring relationship.
  • Complete an Exit Evaluation at the end of the academic year.
